Last month, we welcomed Louis MacKenzie Mayo and his family to the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Auckland, the City of Sails. As the winner of our International Yacht Paint competition, Louis spent a weekend of exclusive tours and exciting activities, right at the heart of the race village.
The first day began with a VIP tour of the Volvo Pavilion, followed by a visit to the team AkzoNobel race boat, one of seven Volvo Ocean 65s created specifically for the race. The family was shown around the boat by local legend Brad Farrand, freshly victorious from team AkzoNobel’s Leg 7 win coming into Auckland. Then, all four visitors got the chance to participate in a series of nail-biting Pro-Am M32 catamaran races alongside several VOR competitors.
The second day featured presentations by Volvo and AkzoNobel, followed by a chance to mingle with the race teams at the Sailor’s Terrace. Then came the start of the race; Louis accompanied team AkzoNobel to the boat, before joining his family on one of the VIP spectator boats to watch the start of Leg 8 (Auckland to Itajaí).
“I’m a keen sailor and spend a lot of time competing and officiating in yacht races around New Zealand,” Louis told us after the weekend.
“I have always been interested in the Volvo Ocean Race, especially since the Volvo returned to Auckland 2012 after over a decade’s absence.” As the City of Sails, Auckland is certainly an iconic stop on the fleet’s global journey.
“The hospitality and generosity from everyone at team AkzoNobel was incredible and made for an exciting weekend,” he continued, “Thank you to AkzoNobel and International for such a unique opportunity!”
Each member of the winning family also received an AkzoNobel gift watch, presented to them by Derrick Nowak; AkzoNobel Yacht Sales Manager for North & South Asia.
“Like the Volvo Ocean Race, AkzoNobel is about inspiring people,” Derrick explained, “whether that means creating color and protection for dynamic vehicles or supporting incredible events like the VOR.
It was a pleasure to receive Louis and his family at the Auckland race village, and I hope we can continue to foster similar inspirational experiences in the future.”
